Lorem Ipsum Generator

Lorem ipsum is placeholder text: words with the shape of prose and none of its meaning, used to fill a layout before the real copy exists.

It comes from a passage of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. The often told story of a sixteenth-century printer has never been traced; its documented use begins on Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s. The point is that it reads as text without being readable, so nobody starts editing it by mistake.

• Set how much you need and in what unit. The text appears at once and changes with the setting.
• Regenerate draws a fresh passage from the same settings, for when the first one happens to read badly.
• Capitals and the wrapper are applied to the text you can already see, so switching them does not swap the passage for a different one.
• Copy takes the output as it stands. Download saves it as .txt, or as .html when a wrapper is selected.

• The words are drawn at random from a bank, so the result is not Latin and does not mean anything. It is meant to be looked at, not read.
• Include numbers puts a three-digit figure about every twenty words, never straight after a full stop and never inside the standard opening. Counted in words, a figure takes the place of a word, so the count stays what you asked for.
• Placeholder text has a way of reaching production. Search a finished page for lorem before it ships.
• Latin has no w and very few of the letters that make English wide, so a layout that fits in Lorem ipsum can overflow once real copy arrives. The English bank is closer in that respect.
• The HTML wrappers are not escaped, because nothing generated here contains a character that would need it.
